Dunga has the look of someone to be heeded. He
is stocky, with a crewcut that suggests he cares nothing for
fashion. He has
the steely eyes of Clint
Eastwood. Dunga's criticism with
most of his teammates is that they "lack humility," and
he's told them that if they keep listening to others' praise, they will not
win the Cup again.
Dunga — pronounced "Dune-ga" — is
an uncomplicated man. He's Brazil's captain and, to put it mildly,
takes the job seriously. Twice Dunga wanted the coach, Mario Zagallo, to alter
positions of players on the field.
Once, the medics failed to patch his cut leg fast enough so
that he had
to miss two minutes of play and yelling at someone else. And
there was
always someone to yell at. Pele thinks fondly enough of Dunga, especially since the
Brazilians won in 1994.

Uncanny master of distribution. He passes the ball
as though it possesses a magnet and is drawn towards the teammate
for whom it is intended.
While
playing at Ellis Park for the FIFA World Stars in the 2-2 draw against
the Mandela African XI on Tuesday, Dunga's record of
accuracy while distributing the ball was an awesome 100%. Not a single
ball going astray! But that is nothing unusual for one of the past decade's
great distributors
of a ball in world soccer. And, what is more, his versatility in passing
for as far as 50 metres, like a master golfer using spin to obtain control
while
driving, or contrastingly releasing the ball for a mere metre or two
while under pressure, are both imbued with spontaneous purpose and precision.

Star of the World Cup? Owen, teenage king of the ripping sprint and
the comedy dive? Okocha, so skilful even his team-mates bought his
dummies? Batistuta
or Vieri, top class goal machines? Bergkamp, petulant genius?
Nah. Dunga. You heard.
With party tricks exploding all around him, he's ignored, solitary,
unique, magnificent.
Football isn't ice skating. Not yet, anyway. In a parallel universe, Dunga
is the genius, Ronaldo is the journeyman and Martin O'Neill was voted president
of FIFA instead of Sepp Blatter.
Dunga. Sourpuss. Hero.
